Thomas Friend Obituary

Capt. Thomas P. Friend USN (ret.), age 90, of Worcester and formerly of Leicester, died Monday February 26 at his home.

His wife of 61 years, Noreen E. (Mara) Friend, died in 2017. 

He leaves six children, Thomas P. Friend Jr. of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Timothy M. Friend and his partner Madelyn Hennessy of Leicester, Theresa M. Friend and her husband James Jacobs of Porcupine, So. Dakota, Theodore F. Friend and his wife Amy of Leicester, Tara J. Friend and her husband Steven Geistfeld of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Trevor J. Friend and his wife Roma of Worcester; nine grandchildren, Kevin Friend, Timory Jacobs, Nicholas Friend and his wife Caitlin, Katelyn and Rebecca Friend, Hudson and Mara Geistfeld, and Hayden and Eathan Friend; three great grandchildren, Declan, Harper and Maeve Friend; a daughter-in-law Gina Friend of Holden; and many nieces and nephews. 

Thomas was born in Worcester, son of John and Doris (Chabot) Friend and grew up on Bell Hill.  He later lived in Leicester for more than 40 years.  He was a graduate of Commerce High School and Worcester State University where he also earned two master’s degrees.

Before Tom graduated from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves at age 17.   He served faithfully in the Navy for 25 years retiring in 1975 with the rank of Captain.  During his service, he spent many summers aboard the USS Keppler. 

Tom had a long and distinguished career in public education.  He began as an elementary grade teacher in Worcester at the former East Kendall St. School. He was later named Principal of a succession of different schools before joining the central administration staff of the Worcester Public Schools.  From 1981 through 1993, he was Deputy Superintendent of the system.   

After retiring as Deputy Superintendent, Tom served as executive Director of the Central Massachusetts Educational Collaborative for 14 years.

Tom was a former Board of Directors President for the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester and was a member of its Hall of Fame.

He loved spending time with his family. He was an avid trout fisherman and enjoyed entertaining family and friends at his home on Cape Cod.  He was a Wednesday night regular at the Wexford House in Worcester for many years.

The Friend family wishes to thank the staff at Tatnuck Park for the amazing compassionate care that Tom received in recent years.

Funeral services will be private.
