Stephen Loring Obituary

Stephen Bowen Loring, 92, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 17, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Steve was a remarkable, patient, kind-spirited man, a true Gentleman who gave of himself without need for recognition. His upbeat demeanor and warm smile will be missed by the many people whose lives he enriched.

Born in Boston, Steve was the third child of Anne Rose Bowen and Atherton Loring Jr. He was educated at Rivers School, Philips Exeter Academy and Chauncy Hall. He graduated from MIT in 1955 with a BS in Business and Engineering Administration. Following completion of Officer Candidate School, he served on Active Duty in the U.S. Navy as a Junior Officer in the Special Weapons Unit from 1956 to 1959. He then started working for Rath & Strong Consulting on assignment in Worcester, where in 1962 he met and married Valerie Stoddard. Steve joined Wyman Gordon Company, working the next 20 years as Manager of Planning until his retirement in 1985.

Steve was fully invested in the Worcester Community. He was on the Board of Consumer Savings and spent hours volunteering for not-for-profit organizations including EcoTarium, Bancroft School, Briarwood, Mohegan Council Boy Scouts of America and the YMCA. He was an active member of First Baptist Church including overseeing its finances for many years.

A true partnership for 63 years, Steve and Val raised three children in Worcester and spent summers in Duxbury where Steve embraced his true passion, sailing. He loved being in and around boats and sharing that love with his children and grands. Steve cherished his time with his grandchildren; he was the ultimate teacher who gave his time with quiet patience. Other interests included travel, fishing, skiing, gardening, photography and especially building and fixing virtually anything. He dedicated years supporting his children’s businesses, Dovetail and Belted Cow.

In 2017, Steve and Val moved to the Oceanview Community in Maine where new friends and the Chorus added great joy to his life. Steve was predeceased by his siblings, Emily Loring in 1954 and Atherton Loring Jr. in 1994. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Valerie, their three children and their spouses: Robert Loring married to Annette of Kennebunkport, ME; Thomas Loring, married to Bibby of Philadelphia, PA; Elizabeth Taylor married to James of Yarmouth, ME. He was a loving grandfather to eight grands: Heather Loring married to Alex Kurose, Gregory and Jacqueline Loring, Sam and Emma Loring, Jack, Emily and Clara Taylor and two step-grandsons: Henry and Nelson Crane; Sisters-in-law Judith S. King and Carol K. Loring and their families.
