Sister Maureen K. Griffin, of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, died on Monday, December19, 2022, at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center. She was 89 years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John H. Griffin and Alice (Barry) Griffin; by her brothers, Richard B. Griffin and John H. Griffin, Jr., by her sister-in-law, Joanne Griffin; and by her nephews Stephen Griffin and Gregory Griffin. She is survived by three siblings: Kevin B. Griffin, Carol M. Griffin, and Gerald G. Griffin; by her sisters-in-law Mary Rose Griffin, Wynne Griffin and Susan Keane; by three generations of nieces and nephews, and by her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
Sister Maureen was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 28,1933. She grew up in Watertown, attended the Boston Academy of Notre Dame, and graduated in 1955 from Trinity College in Washington. She then entered the Sisters of Notre Dame, beginning a religious life of 67 years. (For some years, she was known as Sister Alice Mary.)
Sister Maureen's ministry led her into varied fields. She was a fine educator and a skillful communicator, and her work touched the lives of students of all ages. She earned two master's degrees in English from Middlebury College, and a master's and a doctoral degree in Library and Information Science from Simmons College (now Simmons University).
She taught English at Notre Dame Academy in Hingham and Cardinal Cushing High in South Boston, and later taught English as a second language at Seishin and Kawasaki universities in Japan. She worked as a librarian at Emmanuel College and at a number of public and private schools. Her qualifications in information science led to her work in communications for the Sisters of Notre Dame and for Boston Children's Hospital.
Apart from her professional life, Sister Maureen's qualities of mind and heart endeared her to those she encountered in the course of her life. She will be very much missed.
Sister Maureen’s funeral Mass will be held Thursday, December 22 at 2 p.m. in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester.
