Sister Marion Cotty, 90, died Monday, January 22, 2024 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester
She was born Carol Marie in Winthrop, daughter of William J. and Mabel M. (McGee) Cotty and she entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1954. She graduated from Emmauel College with a bachelor’s degree in English. She earned her master’s in English from Boston College and her master’s in Theology from Emory University, GA.
Sister Marion was a school teacher in several Notre Dame affiliated schools in Connecticut and the greater Boston area, including St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. in New Britain, Conn., Notre Dame H.S. in Bridgeport, Conn., Bishop Fenwick H.S. in Peabody, Mass. She served as a visiting professor at Notre Dame Seishin University in Japan. She chaired the religion department at St. Mary H.S., Cambridge, Mass.
Sister Marion served as peace liaison with World Without War for the Diocese of Oakland, California, and was the Social Ministry Coordinator of the Diocese of Providence, R.I. She served as a pastoral associate for Notre Dame Parish in Durham, Conn. and as a chaplain at Northeastern University in Boston.
Wherever Sister Marion has ministered, and even in her retirement, she has worked for peace. For years, each Friday she joined a group of peace activists in silent protest outside the Federal Court Building in Hartford.
Sister Marion leaves several cousins and her sisters in religion.
Sister Marion’s funeral will be held Monday, January 29 in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a visitation period at 1 p.m. followed by sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m. Burial will be will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery.
