Sister Marie Santry, SNDdeN Obituary

Sister Marie St. Joseph Santry, 91, died Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester.

Sister was born in Lynn, daughter of Timothy J. and Anne Marie (Egan) Santry and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1950. She received her bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College in 1963. Sister received her master’s in elementary education from the University of Massachusetts in 1970, her master’s in Theology from St. Michael College in 1989 and her master’s in Administration and Supervision from Boston College in 2002. She also received an Honorary Doctorate of Human Letters from Boston College in 2002.

Sister Marie was a teacher in several Notre Dame affiliated schools in the greater Boston area including St. Mark’s in Dorchester, St. Augustine’s in Andover and South Boston, and St. Anthony’s in Somerville. She taught at St. Mary Annunciation School in Danvers from 1972 through 1985, and St. Monica School in Methuen from 1987 to 1991.  Sister later spent several years in Japan teaching at the Notre Dame Seishin Junior College in Hiroshima. She was the Principal from 1997 to 2001 at the Holy Family School in Natchez, Miss., the oldest Catholic African-American School in the United States. She concluded her active ministry teaching English as a second language in Cambridge and Somerville.

Sister Marie leaves her nieces and nephews, Sheryl A. Santry McGee, Shawn McGee, Sheila Santry Savia, Michael Gigliotti and Maryann Gigliotti; many great nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law Claire Santry; and her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  She was predeceased by her sister Anna Santry Gigliotti, her brother Thomas J. Santry, and her nephew Edward Santry.

Sister Marie’s funeral will be held Monday, February 27 in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a visitation period at 1 p.m. followed by sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m.  Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery.
