Sister Margaret Brown, R.S.M. Obituary

Sister Margaret Ann Brown, R.S.M. (also known as Sister Mary Anthony) a Sister of Mercy for 77 years, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Wednesday, December 15, 2022 at McAuley Healthcare Center in Watchung, New Jersey. Sister Margaret Ann was born on March 3, 1926 in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, the daughter of Richard A. Brown, of Portland, Maine and Ruth Owen Brown, of Brunswick, Maine.

Sister attended elementary school in Crittenden, Maine before moving to St. Joseph Parish in Shelburne Falls, and then to Worcester, MA, where she became a student and graduate of Ascension High School. She then made the decision to enter the Novitiate of the Sisters of Mercy in Leicester, MA on February 2, 1945. She professed First Vows on July 1, 1947, and made her Final Profession of Vows on July 1, 1950.

Sister Margaret Ann received a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Anna Maria College, Paxton in 1957, and a Master of Education Degree from Worcester State University in 1961.

In her work with and love for the orphaned children at Nazareth in Leicester, and her ministry of education, with children there, at St. Aloysius School in Gilbertville, Blessed Sacrament, Sacred Heart schools in Worcester, St. Patrick School in Largo, FL and Immaculate Heart School in Santa Ana, CA. Sister Margaret Ann was able to instill in her students a love of education and deep sense of gratitude for the gifts of God’s great love, Mercy and a true spirit of joy, which personified her life.

The Funeral Mass for Sr. Margaret Ann will take place on Wednesday, December 28th, at 11:00 am at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Calling hours at the Church from 10:30 to 10:45 will precede the Funeral Mass, after which the Sisters, Mercy Associates and Margaret Ann’s relatives and friends will accompany her in procession to Saint Joseph Cemetery in Leicester, where she will be buried in the Sisters of Mercy Section of the Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sister’s memory may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 505 Mill Street, #155, Worcester, MA 01602.
