Sister Janice Waters, 96, died Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester.
She was born in West Newton, daughter of Harold J. and Elizabeth (Uniacke) Waters. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1947 as Sr. Margaret Cornelia. She graduated from Emmanuel College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology-Chemistry and a Master degree in Urban Pastoral Ministry.
Sister Janice taught in several of the Notre Dame affiliated schools in the greater Boston area and Worcester, including St. Joseph’s School, Boston; Our Lady of the Angels, Worcester; St. Bernard School, Newton; Notre Dame Academy, Hingham and St. Augustine School, Boston. She became Vice Principal and then Principal at Cardinal Cushing High School, South Boston.
In 1975 Sister Janice began her ministry in Leadership as Provincial of the Boston Province until 1981, and again from 1993-1997. Her ministries also included Director of Religious Education, Saugus, MA, grant writer and Coordinator of Volunteers for Project Hope, Boston and Coordinator for the Sisters of Notre Dame Associates Program. In 2004, Sr. Janice volunteered with the Sisters in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Sister Janice leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, 3 great grandnieces, great grandnephews and her Sisters in religion. She was predeceased by her brother, Barry J. Waters and her sisters, Marcia A. Murphy, and Elizabeth C. Roth.
Sister Janice’s funeral will be held Friday, March 21 in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a visitation period at 1 p.m. followed by sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m. The burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery.
