Sister Edith Murphy, 86, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, Worcester

Edith was born in Boston, daughter of James and Edith (Sutcliffe) Murphy and graduated from Emmauel College with a BA in Education. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in 1955.

She was formerly known by her religious name, Sr. Rose Patrice.

Sister Edie was an elementary school teacher in several Notre Dame affiliated schools in the greater Boston and Worcester areas including St. Michael’s School in Hudson, St. Mary’s Elementary School in Lawrence, Cuvilly Arts and Montessori School in Ipswich, and Our Lady of the Angels School in Worcester. She also taught summer school with the Daughters of the Holy Spirit in Gadsden, Alabama and did missionary work in Nigeria. She taught First Communion preparation for eight years in Hudson, Lawrence, and Worcester. She worked in the provincial office in Ipswich. She later worked with the St. Julie Asian Center in Lowell where she helped recent immigrants by teaching English and computer skills.

Sister was a member of the Massachusetts Reading Association in Boston; the African Faith and Justice Network, Washington, DC; and the MA Coalition for Adult Education.

Sister Edith leaves her twin sister, Elaine Barlow of Houston, TX; nieces and nephews, Edith Gorman, Walter McCabe, Mary Frees, James McCabe, Kevin McCabe; and her sisters in religion the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Sister Edith’s funeral will be held Wednesday, December 6, in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a visitation period at 1 p.m. followed by sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and a Mass at 2 p.m.  Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery.
