Sister Cynthia Lowell, 66, of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, died Thursday, August 24, 2023 at the Notre Dame Long Term Care Center.
Sister Cynthia was born in Providence, R.I., daughter Allen J. and Beatrice (Bilodeau) Lowell. She graduated from East Providence High School. After graduating from Rhode Island College with a degree in Elementary Education, she taught in Catholic schools in Rhode Island for several years.
Sister thought about religious life for several years. She was inspired by the story of Sister Julie Billiart, founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and entered the congregation in 1996. Sister professed her Final Vows in Namur, Belgium, then visited her religious Sisters in Nigeria. She loved teaching for several years at St. Margaret School and later at St. Patrick School, both in Lowell. Later she was a receptionist at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center and Notre Dame du Lac in Worcester.
She was predeceased by her parents, brother, Robert Lowell, and her sister, Linda Rusin.
Sister Cynthia leaves behind her sister, Beverly Lusignan, and her brother-in-law, Raymond Rusin, and nieces and nephew, to mourn her loss. Sister Cynthia also leaves behind her sisters in religion, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and her friends.
Sister Cynthia’s funeral will be held Thursday, August 31, in the Notre Dame du Lac Chapel, 555 Plantation St., Worcester, with a visitation period at 1 p.m. followed by a sharing of memories at 1:30 p.m. and the Mass at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame du Lac Cemetery.
