Nancy Connor Obituary

Nancy M. Connor, 97, passed away on Friday, October 21, 2022.

She was the wife of Thomas P. Connor who died in 1983. Her daughter Patricia A. Dowd passed away last year.

She leaves two sons, John J. Connor and his wife Mary K. Connor of Providence, R.I., and Thomas P. Connor Jr. and his partner Suzanne Hickey of Cotuit; a son-in-law John Dowd of Milwaukee; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren

Nancy was born in Worcester, daughter of John Henry and Mary J. (DesBarres) Mathews. She lived most of her life in Worcester and spent many summers on Cape Cod.

Nancy was a graduate Worcester North High School and Endicott College in Beverly, MA.

She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, keeping up with current events and rooting for the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox.

At various times, she was a member of The Worcester Country Club, The Oyster Harbors Club and The Wilderness Club of Naples, Florida.

Nancy had an amazing memory recalling childhood and college activities, trips to the Yale Bowl, mentioning long forgotten names of players and coaches and very eccentric aunts and uncles. She was a great talker and pleasant company to all. She enjoyed travelling with her children, trips across this country and much of Europe several times. She survived the powerful tornado in Worcester of 1953 with two babes in arms as her house imploded.

She loved to speak about her father and his love of opera and FDR. In later years she took up furniture refinishing and naïf painting of whimsical animals and became excellent at both. Her kindness and kind acts touched many people.

There will be calling hours on Sunday, November 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be Monday, November 14, from the funeral home with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St., Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s memory may be made to HopeHealth Hospice, 1085 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02904.
