Mary E. (Carney) McArdle, formerly of Worcester, died Saturday, May 25, 2024, at her home with her family in Dudley.
Her husband of 45 years, John H. (Mac) McArdle, passed away in 2002.
Mary leaves a daughter Claire E. Jones and her husband Larry of Dudley, with whom she lived; a son John M. McArdle and his wife Debbie of Wallace, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Zachary and Joshua Jones, Carlie McArdle, and Sonnie McArdle and her fiancé Michael DiGregorio; a great-grandson Lorenzo DiGregorio; nieces Susan and Debra Carney and a nephew Robert Carney. She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Patricia Carney.
Mary was born in Worcester, daughter of Martin J. and Mary A. (Carrigan) Carney, and lived all of her life in the Brittan Square neighborhood of Worcester, before moving to Dudley two years ago.
Mary graduated from the former Commerce High School in Worcester, and later studied at Boston College.
She was a secretary for many years at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Worcester, before retiring. Previously, she had worked for the director of the Worcester Art Museum.
She was a lifetime member of St. Bernard’s Parish and its successor Our Lady of Providence Parish at St. Bernard’s Church.
Mary was an avid reader and loved mysteries. She enjoyed vacationing in Maine and the many trips she and Mac took with her brother and sister-in-law.
Family was most important to her and she loved hosting Christmas for her extended family every year.
There will be a calling hour Saturday, June 1, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Church, 228 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
