Peggy Curran was a devoted educator, loyal alumna, and cherished member of the Worcester State University community. Her lifelong connection to Worcester State began in 1950 when she entered the one-building college as a freshman, embarking on a journey that left an indelible mark on her alma mater and the field of education.
Peggy graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and earned her Master’s Degree in 1956. Her teaching career began at Indian Hill School, where she taught second and third grade, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the whole child through both academic and social growth. Later, she joined Tatnuck Elementary School, where her dedication and skill led to an invitation from Worcester State to become a Demonstration Teacher. In this role, Peggy opened her classroom to student teachers, providing a welcoming space for learning and mentorship.
Throughout her career, Peggy’s mentorship impacted countless Worcester State student teachers. She believed in a two-way exchange of ideas, blending innovative teaching methods with proven techniques, and her influence continues to resonate in the lives of many educators.
Beyond her teaching career, Peggy was a dedicated volunteer and advocate for Worcester State. In 2003, Peggy received the Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Service to Alma Mater, the highest non-degree honor for alumni, recognizing her unwavering loyalty and service.
Peggy’s generosity extended further with the creation of two scholarships at Worcester State. On the 50th anniversary of her graduation, she established the Margaret M. Curran Endowed Scholarship to support future educators. Later, she established a second scholarship for students pursuing studies in Business, ensuring her legacy of support for students would endure.
