John P. Hayes, 92, of Hyannis, died January 26, 2023 concluding a full and wonderful life.
His wife of over 63 years, Barbara A. Hayes, predeceased him in 2020. He leaves three great nieces, Kellie A, Mattress and her husband Ray of Auburn, Melissa A. Conlin–Stolberg and her wife Donna of Millbury, and Shawna A. Conlin of Auburn; many grand nieces and nephews; and many Godchildren including a Goddaughter, Maureen M. Finlay of Brewster.
Jack grew up in the Green Island area of Worcester. Barbara and Jack began their life together in Jefferson, moved to North Brookfield, then Orleans, and spent their final years together in East Dennis.
Jack was a graduate of Classical High School where he was nicknamed the “Iron Man” by teammates on the football and basketball teams. He attended Worcester State Teacher’s College where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He also attended the University of Connecticut where he received his Diploma in Professional Education. He was a teacher in the Town of Auburn at the middle and high schools for 35 years. He coached football and basketball at the high school. Barbara and Jack owned and ran The Hillbourne House in Orleans for 17 years before officially retiring.
While teaching, Barbara and Jack spent their summers on Cape Cod, traveling through Europe and the Caribbean, and entertaining their many friends at home. In his later years, Jack enjoyed playing golf and walking the streets and beaches of Cape Cod while talking to all those he met along his travels. He was a member of Our Lady of the Cape Parish where he could be seen taking up the collection on Sunday mornings. He enjoyed dining out, cooking in, and reportedly enjoyed all household tasks created by his beloved wife whom he adored. He will be remembered for many things, but most of all for his quick wit and jolly nature.
Calling hours are Friday, February 3, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester, with a funeral Mass to follow at noon at St. John’s Church, 40 Temple St., Worcester. He will be laid to rest with Barbara at a later date in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
