John Butrym Obituary

John J. Butrym. 92, of Auburn died Wednesday morning, July 17, at home after a brief illness.

John leaves a daughter Laurie-Anne K. Roseberry and her husband Richard of Sterling, a son James J. Butrym and his wife Sarah Anne Baillie of Worcester, and many nieces and nephews including Carolyn Adams and Christopher Butrym Sr.  He was predeceased by his brothers Bernard and William Butrym, and his former wife Norma E. (Dunn) Butrym. He also leaves his lifelong friend Judge Jan Michalski as well as close personal friend Richard Prefontaine. The family would like to say a special thanks to Esther, Gladys, Kate, Hannah and Molly who cared for him at home for the past year.

John was born in Worcester, son of Ludwig and Weronica (Pocepowicz) Butrym.  He has lived in Auburn for more than 40 years.

He graduated from the former St. Mary’s High School in Worcester where he was a celebrated basketball player.  He furthered his education earning a degree at Worcester Junior College.  John served in the Navy reserves on a destroyer and then worked as a draftsman at the Wyman-Gordon Company in Worcester and North Grafton.  He worked for the company for 37 years, retiring in 1992. 

John loved the outdoors, especially cross-country skiing, and canoeing.  Many summers were spent at the Mount Cardigan Lodge in New Hampshire. He was a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC). 

Calling hours are Friday, July 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.  There will be a funeral service Saturday, July 20, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home.  Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
