Joan E. (Nugent) Quinlivan

Joan E. (Nugent) Quinlivan, 89, of Worcester, died Friday, June 6, at Tatnuck Park. Her husband of 49 years, Deacon James P. Quinlivan Sr., passed away in 2002.

Joan leaves two sons, James P. Quinlivan Jr. and Denise Sinkus, and Michael T. Quinlivan, and a daughter-in-law Karen Quinlivan; five grandchildren Patrick, Michael, Kathryn, Mary and Emily; five great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. She is survived by brothers and sisters in law, Robert Fitzgerald, Joe and Ann Quinlivan, Tom and  Anne Quinlivan as well as cousins and many nieces and nephews.

Joan’s son Joseph Quinlivan died in 2014, and her son Brian Quinlivan died in 2018.  She was also predeceased by her twin sister Jean Bartholomew and her husband Richard as well as her brothers James and Gerald Nugent.    

Joan was born in Worcester, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (McGahey) Nugent, and lived in Worcester all her life.  She attended St. Peter’s High School. 

Married for almost 50 years, Joan devoted herself to raising four boys and maintaining her home. After her boys were grown, Joan worked for 30 years as a cashier at the CVS in her Lincoln St. neighborhood, greeting all with a smile, until retiring at the age of 80. 

She was a faithful member of St. Joan of Arc Church for over 60 years.  She was also a longtime supporter of her husband’s ministry as a Deacon in the Diocese of Worcester at St. Paul’s Cathedral. 

Everyone who knew Joan will miss her kind spirit, generosity, zest for life and deep abiding faith. 

Calling hours are Wednesday, June 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.  The funeral Mass will follow at noon at St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
