Joan M. (Blondin) Lyons, 88, of Green Harbor and formerly of Worcester, died Friday, August 4, 2023 at home after an illness.
Her husband of 58 years, James F. Lyons Jr., passed away in 2016. Her son Lieut. James F. “Jay” Lyons III, a Worcester firefighter, died in the Worcester Frankin Street warehouse fire in 1999.
Joan leaves a daughter Kathryn M. Campbell and her husband James H. Campbell of Green Harbor, with whom she lived. Kathy was devoted to caring for her mother these past few years as her health declined.
Joan was predeceased by her sister Alice L. Callery, and her brothers, William F. and John J. Blondin. She leaves many nieces and nephews.
Joan was born in Worcester, daughter of Felix and Sarah (Durkin) Blondin. She lived most of her life in Worcester. She spent many summers in the Green Harbor section of Marshfield before moving there year-round five years ago. Joan graduated in 1953 from North High School in Worcester. She earned her nursing degree in 1956 from the former Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.
Joan was an accomplished pianist and played with great joy until quite recently. She made several trips with her family to Ireland. She also enjoyed knitting.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Marshfield and a former member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Worcester.
There will be calling hours Tuesday, August 8, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
