James Cantwell Obituary

James E. Cantwell, 88, died Saturday, April 22, 2023 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.

His wife Joann (Ryan) Cantwell passed away in 1994.

Jim leaves two children, Chris Cantwell and his wife Maureen of Gilmanten I.W., N.H., and Cara Cantwell and her partner David Robinson of Randolph; three grandchildren, Ryan and Erin Cantwell, and Jayden Robinson; and his sister Jean Corbin of Quincy.

He was predeceased by his brother William Cantwell and his sister Mary Yando.

Jim was born in Malden, son of William F. and Josephine (Sullivan) Cantwell. He grew up in Falmouth and graduated from Holy Cross Seminary High School in South Bend, Ind. and Boston College.  He served in the Massachusetts Air National Guard.   

Jim was a teacher at the Shrewsbury Junior and Senior high schools for many years.  He also worked for a longtime in the library of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church where he was a lector.  He was also a member of the Boston College Alumni Association.

Calling hours are Thursday, May 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.   The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester.   Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Worcester.
