Geraldine McGovern Obituary

Geraldine Kelley McGovern, 85, of Worcester, died Wednesday, April 26, 2023 while visiting Vieques, Puerto Rico.

Gerry’s husband of 61 years, Edmund T. McGovern, died in 2021.

She is survived by four daughters, Margaret McGovern of Vieques, P.R., Joanne and her husband Robert Fay of New Braintree, Elizabeth McGovern of Holden, and Christina McGovern and her husband Kevin Lynch of Worcester, and five grandchildren, Bridget, Jack, Jenna, Olivia and Aelic.  Her daughter Kathleen Phelan passed away in 2018.

Gerry was born in Worcester July 8, 1937 to Jeremiah J. and Margaret (Lucey) Kelley.  She graduated from St. Peter’s High School and the Salter School.  After raising her family, she returned to work at the Elm Park Center for Early Childhood Education and then 33 years in the Finance Office of the Worcester Art Museum.

Gerry loved politics and was a life-long member of the Democratic City Committee, receiving their Woman Democrat of the Year award in 1996.

She loved to travel and was the recipient of several Frances Kinnicutt awards at the Museum enabling her to travel and photograph in Africa, Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Mexico.

Calling hours are Monday, May 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester on Tuesday, May 16, at 11 a.m.
