Elizabeth O'Keefe Obituary

Elizabeth A. (Walsh) O’Keefe, 89, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2026. A devoted wife to the late Bob O’Keefe, loving sister and adoring aunt, Betty was a lifelong Worcester resident, known for her devotion to family and friends. She was a true matriarch in all aspects of her life.

Born in Worcester on January 20, 1937, Betty was the elder daughter of the late Michael and Helena (Lyons) Walsh. She grew up in the Vernon Hill neighborhood, where she began a life defined by faith, family, friends and service. She shared an unbreakable and unique bond with her sister, Joan, who was her closest confidante throughout her life. Betty and Joan’s friendship served as the foundation for the entire family.

In 1954 Betty graduated from Ascension High School at the top of her class. She served as the senior class president, and was known for her quick wit and moves on the basketball court. She continued her education at Emmanuel College on a scholarship and later earned a Master of Education from Worcester State. At both Ascension and Emmanuel Betty developed cherished friendships that lasted throughout her life.

Her early professional years were dedicated to the classroom. Betty taught English at Millbury Memorial High School and later at Framingham South High School. In addition, she shared her passion for theatrics by directing school plays.

In 1964, Betty married the love of her life, Bob O’Keefe, the longtime Worcester City Clerk. They shared 48 wonderful years together. Early in their marriage they traveled, and especially enjoyed golfing in Florida. Later in life they spent time on Cape Cod. Betty and Bob loved their weekends in West Harwich with their nieces, and eventually with their nieces’ families as well. Always warm and welcoming, Betty – the consummate host – never missed an opportunity to entertain her treasured family and friends at the holidays.

Though she retired early on from teaching, Betty’s commitment to mentorship continued through her decades of service with the Girl Scouts. She helped shape the lives of countless young women in her role as a Gold Award Advisor for the Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts (formerly Montachusett). In 2003 Betty was honored to be a recipient of the organization’s prestigious Women of Distinction Award.

While Betty took pride in her role as a Gold Award Advisor with the Girl Scouts, her greatest “Gold Awards” were her two beloved nieces. She was their fiercest advocate, funniest critic, and most loyal confidante. Their happiness and successes brought her immeasurable pride and boundless joy.

But nothing brought her more joy than her grandnephews and grandnieces. To say she loved them is an understatement. They were her world and she was theirs. Betty would attend all their activities whether in person or later on, virtually. “Bee” was their biggest fan. She found joy in all that they did.

Betty also cherished her role as matriarch and had a profound impact on her extended family. She loved each member with all of her heart, and was a caregiver to all. During her adult life she guided, counseled, and cared for her father-in-law, mother, aunts, husband, and nieces. Most recently, Betty took her sister into her own home during Joan’s final years.

A devout Catholic, Betty lived the tenets of her faith through service and kindness to those whose lives she touched. She and Bob were members of and regularly attended Mass at Immaculate Conception Parish. In her later years, Betty accompanied her sister Joan to Christ the King Church.

Betty leaves behind two nieces, Elizabeth “Betty” A. Blute, her husband Robert III, and their sons Robert “Bobby” S. and Jack W. of Worcester; Michele M. Olbrys, her husband Greg, and their daughters Lena M. and Cailin A. of Ridgefield, CT; a niece-in-law, Palma O’Keefe of Fort Myers, FL and her sons, Thomas J., his wife, Mary, and their two children, Gracie and Jamie of Odessa, FL, and Christopher D., and his wife, Lizzy of Summerville, SC.

In addition to her parents, Betty is predeceased by her husband, Robert J. O’Keefe, sister, Joanne M. McCann, brothers-in-law, Stephen J. McCann and Daniel P. O’Keefe; and nephews, Daniel B. O’Keefe and Thomas P. O’Keefe.

Betty’s family takes comfort knowing she was surely welcomed into the loving arms of her deeply missed husband, sister and parents.
