Eileen Kneeland Obituary

Eileen (Cataldo) Kneeland passed away peacefully at the Rose Monahan Hospice in Worcester on January 8. She was 61.

Eileen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, friend and neighbor. She greeted every person she met with warmth, humor and a gigantic smile. A proud graduate of Notre Dame Academy and The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, she was a varsity athlete at both institutions, excelling in field hockey, basketball, softball and swimming. She was inducted into the Notre Dame Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2022.

Soon after graduating college, Eileen married David J. Kneeland and together they started their family, settling in Holden. She was always active in her sons’ lives, as PTA president of Mountview Middle School and later supporting them in all their activities and sports throughout high school and college: at John’s soccer games or Patrick’s crew races, she was popular among all their friends. She was a talented cook and always made sure that her family and friends, and their family and friends were well fed.

Eileen was also a talented artist, working in paint, decoupage and stained glass. She created many beautiful and intricate pieces and often donated her work to charitable causes. One of her favorite causes was the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Massachusetts, where she became an active member and fundraiser after being diagnosed with MS in 1998. And her MS did not keep her down. An athlete through and through, she was a fixture at the Greendale YMCA and the Frank Nash Gym. She loved being outdoors, sailing, walking, skiing, biking and hiking with family, friends and her beloved golden retrievers, Buddy, Henley and Kilty.

Eileen also touched many lives through her professional work. While her children were still young, she became a licensed physical therapy assistant, bringing her healing touch and encouragement to countless patients at UMass/Memorial Hospital and Fairlawn Rehabilitation Center. Later, she became an integral part of team at the Worcester District Attorney’s office where she first worked as a victim witness advocate and later in community outreach, educating thousands of school children in the prevention of bullying and cyber bullying.

For all her accomplishments, Eileen will be remembered most for the circles of love she created and sustained everywhere she went. Whether in Holden or Falmouth, or at the Boston Home where she received such great care in her last months, she filled her homes and communities with love. Most of all, she was at the center of a growing close-knit family where she cared for her husband, sons, daughters-in-law, Elizabeth and Maddie, and grandchildren Owen, Roxie, Conor and Rory with unfailing love and dedication.

Eileen is pre-deceased by her parents Dr. Felix and Anne Cataldo. She leaves her husband of 39 years, David J. Kneeland, Jr. of Holden, her sons John Kneeland (Elizabeth) of Amherst, Patrick Kneeland (Madeline) of Sherborn, and her grandchildren: Owen, Roxanna, Conor and Rory Kneeland. She leaves her brothers and sisters: Paul Cataldo (Joan) of Annandale, VA, Peter Cataldo of Stowe, VT, Lisa Cataldo (Nicholas Stuart-Jones) of New York, NY, Michael Cataldo, Sr. of Hingham, Thomas Cataldo (Lisa) of Newton, and Maria Cataldo-Cunniff (Gary Cunniff) of Quincy, as well as her maternal aunt, Patricia Gagne of Leominster and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed her colleagues at the Worcester District Attorney’s office and many others, including life-long friends, Kathleen Monahan Myshrall and Maura Marshall McCarthy and dear friends Jodee Bishop, Cathy Gusha, Maureen Kirk, Ciji Santella, Mindy Cheever, and Jenny Glickman.
