David J. Twiss, 92, of Worcester, died Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home after a brief illness.
His wife of 67 years, Helen C. (Dunn) Twiss, passed away last December. He leaves two children, Margaret M. Twiss of Worcester, and David J. Twiss, Jr. and his wife Diane of Barre; a granddaughter, Rachel E. Twiss; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Robert S. Twiss, Jr.
David was born in Worcester, son of Robert S. and Margaret M. (Stankard) Twiss. He graduated from North High School, received his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education from Worcester State Teachers College (now Worcester State University), and his Masters Degree in History from Assumption College.
David began his 60 year long career in education as a teacher at the Butterick and Houghton Schools in Sterling. He then taught in the Worcester Public Schools at Burncoat Junior High School and South High School. In 1968, he joined the faculty of Worcester State College teaching History and Political Science until his retirement in 2015. During that time, he served on and chaired numerous college committees and served several terms as President of the Worcester State College Faculty and Librarian’s Union, a chapter of the Massachusetts State College Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association.
David served in the Massachusetts Army National Guard for several years. He was a member of St Christopher’s Church and the Massachusetts Teachers Association.
David enjoyed reading, researching and visiting historic sites, and summer vacations on Cape Cod with his family and friends.
Calling hours are Friday, November 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. The funeral will be held Saturday, November 16, with a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Church, 950 West Boylston St., Worcester. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of the Emergency Room and 3 West at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center University Campus and the staff of the Rose Monahan Hospice Home for their kindness and care for David over the past month.
