Christine Anne (Hurley) Quinn, 60, of Southbridge and Worcester, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 9, with family and friends at her side at Westside House of Worcester. She leaves her loving and devoted husband of 37 years, Timothy P. Quinn of Southbridge, and two sons, Kyle and wife Jane of Worcester, Kevin and his fiancée Sharlene Santana of Worcester, and a large extended family.
Born and raised in Worcester, Christine was the daughter of Thomas S. Hurley and Mary Anne (Long) Bigger Hurley, and sister of Karen (Bigger) Taylor, all of whom predeceased her. She leaves her siblings Michael Bigger and his wife Leona of Webster, Terrence Bigger and his wife Pamela of Worcester, Thomas Hurley and his wife Kristin of Milford, NH, Sean Hurley of Natick and Patrick Hurley and his wife Pamela of Placida, FL, and sister-in-law and lifelong friend Rose Bigger of Worcester.
Throughout her life, Christine shared a special bond and much laughter and love with her husband Tim’s large family. Christine joins her mother-in-law, Mary Virginia Quinn, father-in-law Michael J. Quinn, Sr., and sister-in-law Marianne Quinn of Eastham, all of whom predeceased her. She also leaves Tim’s siblings and their spouses, Judith and Michael Marr of Worcester, Michael J. Quinn, Jr. of Brewster, Pamela and Steven Cundall of Hyannis, Terry and Andrea Quinn of Southbridge, Diane and Michael Sullivan of Worcester, and Daniel and Diane Quinn of Holden. Christine was a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Christine graduated from North High School in 1980, Salter Secretarial School and attended Quinsigamond Community College, all of Worcester.
Passionate to help others, particularly those with special needs, Christine volunteered early in life serving developmentally challenged adults at a local Worcester agency.
She worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital for over a decade serving in administrative roles before dedicating herself to her most rewarding work as a full-time mom to Kyle and Kevin. Later she supported her father’s business, and also worked with her good friend, Dr. Robin Taher at her dental practice in Worcester. Most recently, she served at the YMCA Child Development Center of Southbridge working with pre-school children.
Christine overcame an immense challenge in her early twenties when she had a benign brain tumor removed. Complications from that condition began to impact her several years ago. For over a decade, she faced a series of health challenges that affected her balance, vision and more, which eventually led to total hearing loss.
Christine’s character and outlook were consistent throughout her life. She was eager to help others, joyfully resilient, and optimistically upbeat. Despite the significant health or personal challenges that came her way in life, she accepted them with a quiet grace and dignity.
As her advancing illnesses curtailed some hobbies including outdoor activities, enjoying music, concerts, dancing, and working with children, Christine would explore new activities to replace the ones in which she could no longer engage. She read large print books, took up knitting, and enjoyed nurturing her beautiful gardens as tributes to her late sister Karen and mother Mary. Visiting family and friends was her greatest priority and pastime, where she effortlessly displayed her radiant smile, whimsical sense of humor, and selfless eagerness to help others.
While her earthly presence will be sorely missed, we hope to honor her by emulating her kindness and care for others. Her life was truly a blessing to all of us who were fortunate to know and love her.
Christine's husband, children and extended family are deeply grateful to the extraordinary staff at Westside House of Worcester, and New England Hospice. Their friendship, compassion and care enriched Christine immeasurably during her final months.
Calling hours will be Monday, November 14th, 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. A brief prayer service will be led by Father Jonathan Slavinskas at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
Her family will hold a celebration of Christine's life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Toys for Tots at 100 Front Street, Suite D, Worcester MA 01608 or www.toysfortots.org.
